John Wright Hickenlooper Jr. was born on February 7, 1952, in Narberth, Pennsylvania. His parents are John Wright Hickenlooper and Anne Doughten Kennedy. He is the grandson of former United States federal judge, Smith Hickenlooper. Following the death of his father, he was raised by his mother. His cousin George Hickenlooper was a documentary filmmaker.
Hickenlooper attended The Haverford School in Haverford, Pennsylvania. Later he went to Wesleyan University for his BA in English. Hickenlooper has also earned his master’s degree in Geology. To go through his final exams, he started using lithium carbonate capsules.

John Hickenlooper started his career as a geologist. In the early 1980s, he used to work for Buckhorn Petroleum. However, he was discharged from duties when Buckhorn Petroleum was sold. In 1988, he became the business partner of Wynkoop Brewing Company.
It was in 2003 when he run for mayor of Denver. By winning the election, he became the 43rd mayor of Denver in July 2003. As mayor, he came up with a 10-year plan to deal with different issues.
Hickenlooper was again re-elected in 2007. However, he resigned after he was elected the governor. Later he was made an executive member of the Denver Convention Host Committee 2008. In 2010, many believed that he will be the potential candidate for governor of Colorado.
