His mother Helen, was involved in the art field and worked as a Theatre actress; his father John Henry Heard worked for the office of the Secretary Defence. John was the youngest son and had three siblings, two sisters, one of whom Cordis, who was an actress and brother Mathew who died in the year 1975. He did his schooling from the Gonzaga College High School and attended Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, and the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
