He was born John Richard Deacon in Leicester, England, on 19 August 1951. His father, Arthur Henry, worked at an insurance company, and the family moved to Oadby town because of his work. His mother, Lillian Molly Deacon, was a homemaker.

He attained his education from Linden Junior School in Leicester for his early education and later went to Gartree High School. From there, he enrolled at Beauchamp Grammar School in Oadby. When he was at school, he became interested in electronics, and he read several magazines on the subject.  He later joined Chelsea College in London, where he obtained a degree in Electronics with a First Class Honours.
