Cleese was born in Weston Super Mare, Somerset. His mother is Muriel Evelyn, the daughter of an auctioneer and his father Reginald Francis Cleese, who was an insurance salesman and later died in 1972. He was the only child. Initially, his surname was cheese, but his father thought it was embarrassing and used the name Cleese during the 1st world war. During his early childhood, he supported Bristol City FC and Somerset County Cricket Club.

He studied at St Peter’s Preparatory School, where he did well at cricket and boxing and an English prize. At the age of 13, during an English Public School in Bristol, he was awarded an exhibition at Clifton College. He played cricket in the first XI, and he performed well academically, bypassing 8- O Levels and 3 A-Levels in maths, physics, and chemistry. After completing his National Service, he didn’t qualify to go to Cambridge, where he returned to his prep school for two years to teach science, English, Geography, History, and Latin.

He went to study law at Downing College, Cambridge, and also joined Cambridge Footlights. At the Footlights theatrical club, which he spent most of the time with Tim Brooke Taylor and Bill Oddie, where he met Graham Chapman, his writing partner. In 1961, he wrote a footlight Revue/ Thought I Saw It Move and was a registrar for Footlights club. He also cast in the Footlights Revue Double Take, and he graduated from Cambridge in 1963. Later on, his father sent him cuttings from the Daily Telegraph to offer management jobs despite his successes on The Frost Report.

Personal Life

Cleese married Connie Booth in 1968 in the US. They gave birth to Cynthia Cleese, who later got married to Ed Solomon, a writer, and director. Cleese has two Grandchildren Evan and Olivia. Cleese and Connie wrote a Script together and co-starred in both series of Fawlty Towers, but before the release of the second series, they divorced. However, they finished it and were aired since they were reported to have remained close friends even after the divorce.

In 1981 he married Barbara Trentham, an American Actress, and they had a daughter together called, Camilla Cleese but they also divorced in 1990. After two years, he married Alyce Faye Eichelberger, American Psychotherapist, but they divorced in 2008. He relocated to his London property and a home on the Royal Crescent in Bath, Somerset. Later in 2012, he married Jennifer Wade on the Caribbean Island of Mystique, an English jewelry designer and a former model.

Due to passion for Lemurs, he hosted the 1998 BBC documentary in the Wild: Operation Lemur with John Cleese, which followed up the progress of a reintroduced of black and white ruffed lemurs back to Madagascar in the Betampona Reserve. He has partially donated the project. Another species of lemur was named after Cleese by the scientist led by Urs Thurman from Zurich University, who found it because of Cleese’s fondness for the Lemurs and his full effort to protect and preserve them, and it was titled as Cleese’s Woolly Lemur.
