Amos was born on December 27, 1939, to Annabelle P. and John A. Amos, Sr. in Newark, New Jersey. He went to Long Beach City College and completed his graduation from Colorado State University. He possessed a degree in sociology and became a qualified social worker. Eventually, he played on the Colorado State Rams football team. He is also a Golden Gloves Boxing Champion.
