Rogan is the son of Joseph who used to work as a police officer, and he was born in 1967 in the state of New Jersey. Rogan has an Italian and Irish descent, and he didn’t grow up knowing his father too well since the parents divorced when he was just five.

One day his parents took him to watch a film by Richard Pryors that was called Live on the Sunset Strip, and it made him laugh so much. At the gym where he used to train, he would make jokes and make the others laugh, and due to that, his fellow trainees pressured him to try stand-up comedy.
His first stand-up comedy was in a Stitches comedy club in Boston back in 1988. Apart from comedy, Joe also undertook other jobs such as being a martial arts trainer, newspaper delivery, doing some construction work and even driving a limousine to make ends meet.
His success as a full-time comedian came when he appeared on MTV comedy show Half Hour Comedy Hour, and that led him to get a job with Disney network. Later he would become an actor in Fox sitcom Hardball and even perform comedy shows for free at The Comedy Store. Between 1995 and 1999 he would then star at NBC sitcom NewsRadio.
