James Brien Comey was born on December 14, 1960 in Yonkers, New York. He is the son to J. Brien Comey who worked at a corporate real estate and Joan Marie who was a computer consultant and a homemaker.

His family moved in the early 70’s to Allendale, New Jersey. E went to Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale. He graduated in 1982 from College of William and Mary where he was studying religion and chemistry.
