Lisa Colter was born in Mirriam Johnson on 25^th May 1943 in Phoenix, Arizona, where she was also raised. She grew up in a very strict Pentecostal home where her mother used to be a Pentecostal preacher. Her dad, on the other hand, made a living through race-car driving. She loved music at an early age, and at the age of 11, she became her church’s pianist.

She joined Mesa High School, where she graduated in 1961. After graduating from high school, she began her career in music, singing in local clubs located in Phoenix. This is where she met Duane Eddy and married him at the age of 18. She released two singles that had a mediocre performance, with the second one failing to get even the regional airplay.

At the age of 18, she married Duane Eddy, who she had met in Phoenix at the start of her singing career. They married in Las Vegas and settled in Los Angeles. Her first stage name was Mirriam Eddy, but later changed to Jessi Colter after their separation. Jessi Colter and Eddy have a daughter together called Jennifer. In 1968, their divorce was finalized after separating for a short time.

She met Waylon Jennings in 1969, who she married and moved with to Nashville, Tennessee. Their son Waylon Albright Jennings was born on 19^th May 1979.
