His mother is Hazel Lawler, and he was raised in Memphis until his father was relocated to Ohio to a Ford company assembly plant in Lorain.  Lawler is the cousin of a professional wrestler by the name of Honky Tok Man. His first wife was, Kay who they had two children together, Brian, who wrestled in WWE as Brian Christopher and Grandmaster Sexay, and Kevin, who dabbled as a professional referee and wrestler as Kevin Christian and Freddie Gilbert. In his autobiography, Lawler stated that his short physical appearance had hindered him from reaching similar success as Brian. Kevin was arrested in 2008 on charges of trespassing and burglary.
