It was the same year that his father Pat Brown was elected Governor. But he soon found that priesthood was not his calling and in 1960 gave it up to pursue law. He graduated from Yale Law School in 1964. Post-graduation, he practiced law and worked for well-known law firms. However, it was the humiliating defeat of Pat Brown in the election of 1966 to Ronald Reagan that made Brown Jr determined to re-establish his family name in the world of politics.
