Jennifer Jane Saunders is an English screenwriter, actress and comedian. She became famous in the 80’s after she graduated from Central School of Speech and Drama and became a member of The Comic Strip with her partner Dawn French with whom they starred and co-wrote “French and Saunders” their eponymous sketch show.

Jennifer Jane Saunders was born in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, England on July 6, 1958. She is the daughter to her father Robert Thomas Saunders who was a pilot in the Royal Air Force and her mother Barbra Jane Saunders a biology teacher. She grew up together with her three brothers.

Sanders resulted to changing schools many times because of her father’s career. She started going to boarding school since she was five years. Then she went to an independent school in London called St. Paul’s Girls School in west London. One year after she had left school she worked in Italy as an au pair.

In 1977 she enrolled at the Central School of Speech and Drama to study a teaching course in London. It is in the same school that she met with her partner Dawn French.

In the early 80’s Saunders and French came to the spotlight after they became members of “The Comic strip” which was an informal comedy collective, art of the alternative scene in the 80’s. Then they participated in the advert in “The Stage” which ad only male performers, but at this time was searching for female comedians to perform at The Comic Strip.

They were hired as soon as they walked in and have been members of the Comic Strip which also consists of members such as Rick Mayall, Peter Richardson, Robbie Coltrane and Adrian Edmondson.

As a group they have performed at the Boulevard Theatre and they gained a massive following with visiting members such as Jack Nicholson, Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman all of whom joined in the performance at some time.

in 1992 the comedy group appeared in “Five Go Mad In Dorset” an episode of The Comic Strip Presents at the Channel 4 first night on air.

In 1985 Saunders co wrote and starred “Girls on Top” alongside Tracey Ullman, Ruby Wax and French. She also starred in a Comic Strip named “The Supergrass” a parody of 80’s police dramas. Saunders featured in “Strike” with her role being Meryl Streep in the 1984 miners’ strike. On “The Young Ones” she appeared twice as a guest.
