Flake was born in Snowflake, Arizona. His mother was Nerita flake and his father, Dean Measer Flake. He is the great great grandson of Mormon Missionary William Jordan, whose surname used to form the name of his hometown. He grew up in a cattle ranch before he attended Brigham Young University, where he got his Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations and later on, a Master of Arts degree in political science.
