Even during his childhood, he was influenced by country music acts such as Alabama and Alan Jackson. After he graduated from Jefferson Davis High School, Johnson joined Jacksonville State University. During his time at Jacksonville State University, Johnson was a member of the Marching Southerners.

Johnson never graduated from university, for he quitted after two years and served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. He served in the Marine for eight years. While in Marines, he began playing country music in various bars in the Montgomery area. By 2000, Johnson left for Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue a career in country music. His first release on the name was a Christmas-themed EP, The Christmas Song, including several covers and one new original song, which was released in November 2014.

In 2019, he played alongside Warren Haynes, Don Was, Lukas Nelson, together with Cyril Neville on life even performing The Last Waltz Tour, during The Band’s 1976 farewell show.
