Toney was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His father let the family right after he was born. He grew up in an ethnic neighborhood, and he grew up in the same colony and the same time as Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Buster Mathis Jr. Toney had a difficult upbringing and fought in streets and sold crack cocaine. At 11, he first joined a boxing gym. He was also a star American football player but shifted his attention to boxing. He lost a lot of weight and started his amateur career.

He had a brief amateur career of 35 matches, including 33 wins (32 knockouts) and two losses. After starting in 1988, it was here that he met his trainer Bill Miller who is said to have created his traditional or orthodox style of boxing.
James had fought in middleweight, super middleweight, cruiserweight, heavyweight. In the middleweight division, he won IBF and the Lineal middleweight championship. In the same year, he also won the Fighter of the Award by the Ring Magazine. After winning the IBF in middleweight, he tried and won the same title in the super middleweight division too. He defended his title two times, and his last fight in the division was against Roy Jones Jr., a silver medallist of the 1988 Olympics. Jones destroyed Toney.
After the heavy defeat, he played one-off matches in different divisions before taking a break and then coming back to fight in cruiserweight. As soon as he started, he defeated many former World Champions and blew away the IBF elimination opponent before getting a knockout victory to win the IBF cruiserweight. He was now a three-weight World Champion. He got three awards, the comeback of the year, fighter of the year, and his IBF final bout were named Fight of the Year. After his last match in the division, he required knee surgery and was off for some time.
He came back in 2003 to win a belt in the heavyweight division, and in his first fight, he defeated legendary former Heavyweight Champion, the aging Evander Holyfield. He earned a series of bouts and won the WBA Championship in the weight division but was disqualified after he failed a drug test and was banned for 90 days. After his return, he won and lost some bouts and won a minor Championship, one of the International Boxing Union. He tried for the WBF title but lost in 2012. He tried again in 2017 at the age of 48 and won against Mike Sheppard to finally win the WBF heavyweight title. It was his last fight, and he announced his retirement.
He returned to the ring to fight Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) after a meeting with the UFC president. He faced multiple title winner and Hall of Famer Couture. James was bashed, and he submitted it within the first round. It was a freak show. He left MMA after just one match and retired altogether.
