Toney was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His father let the family right after he was born. He grew up in an ethnic neighborhood, and he grew up in the same colony and the same time as Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Buster Mathis Jr. Toney had a difficult upbringing and fought in streets and sold crack cocaine. At 11, he first joined a boxing gym. He was also a star American football player but shifted his attention to boxing. He lost a lot of weight and started his amateur career.

He tried again in 2017 at the age of 48 and won against Mike Sheppard to finally win the WBF heavyweight title. It was his last fight, and he announced his retirement.
