James Toback was born on 23 November 1944 in Manhattan, New York City, the U.S., His family, belonged to the Jewish religion. He was taken to Selma Judith (Nee Levy) as his mother and Irwin Lionel Toback as his father. James Toback’s mother was the leader of the League of Women Voters and worked as an arbitrator of political debates on NBC. His father worked as a stockbroker and a former leader of Dreyfus Company.

He attended the Fieldstone School, where he graduated in 1963. He later joined at Harvard College, magna cum laude in 1966.
