James Gorman, whose full name is James Patrick Gorman, was born on the 14th of July 195 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. His father, Kevin Gorman, worked as an engineer. He has nine siblings, and his sister works as a judge on the Supreme Court of Victoria. Coming to his education, he has attended Xavier College and the University of Melbourne from where he earned his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Law degree.

Upon completing his education, he joined the law firm Phillips Fox and Masel (now known as DLA Piper) before moving to the U.S. to study MBA at Columbia Business School. Once he completed his education, he went to work at McKinsey & Company, where he eventually became a senior partner.
His contributions to McKinsey & Company include working on the Merrill Lynch account for ten years and developing Merrill’s online internet strategy. He then went on to work at Merrill Lynch in 1999 as the Chief Marketing Officer and, within a couple of years, became the person in charge of handling Merrill’s brokerage business.
In February of 2006, he left Merrill to join Morgan Stanley in the position of the President and the Chief Operating Officer of the Global Wealth Management Group (GWMG). Also, he became the co-head of Strategic Planning with CFO, Colm Kelleher. In December of 2007, he became the Co-President of Morgan Stanley besides earning the responsibility of handling Wealth and Asset Management.
In 2009, he helped in the creation of the largest wealth management platform globally when he led the merger and integration of Morgan Stanley’s wealth management business with Citi’s Smith Barney business. In 2010, he became the CEO of Morgan Stanley and, two years later, became the Chairman as well.
He also serves as the board member on several reputed organizations including, serving on the Federal Advisory Council to the U.S. Federal Reserve Board, the Monetary Authority of Singapore International Advisory Panel, and the Institute of International Finance. He has previously served on the board and the Chairman of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.
