Music career

J.D Souther’s love for music came as a result of influence from Roy Orbison, who was an icon by then. Souther did his first recording with Cinders Group that used to tour neighboring Norman Petty studios situated in Clovis, NM.

In 1965, Souther released his 45 songs on a small RIC label. In 1966, Norman Petty studios then took the recording to Warner Brothers to produce a single song with the title: John David and The Cinders.

J.D Souther met Glenn Frey, a songwriter, and a singer soon after he relocated to Los Angeles County.  The two became friends and collaborated in several songs. They later formed Long Branch Pennywhistle folk duo. In 1970, the duo released a single song under Amos Records managed by Jimmy Browen.

Following the release of their single song, Souther met other musicians who are; Chris Hillman and Ritchie Furry. They formed a band known as Hillman-Furry. They released two albums, but they did not receive success in the music market. As a result, the group became dysfunctional, and everyone had to leave in search of greener pastures.

Souther co-produced songs with Linda Ronstadt, some of them include; Faithless Love from Don’t Cry Album, Sometimes You Can’t Win and Hearts against the Wind that featured in Urban Boy film released in 1980.

In 1970, he released “You’re Only Lonely song,” which became a hit reaching position seven on the billboard of Hot 100. It later reached place 1, where it remained there for a month and one week.

Souther collaborated with James Taylor, his old friend, and released Her Too Own song. In 1981, the song became position 11 on Hot 100 chat and later on number 5 on AC Radio. His song wishing on Another Lucky Star featured on Permanent Record film as the soundtrack.
