Ilhan Omar is a Somalian woman, as she was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, and during childhood, she grew up in Baidoa, Somalia. Her mother died when Omar was 2, so her father and grandfather raised her. To escape the war, Omar and her family stayed in a Dadaab refugee camp in Garissa County, Kenya, for four years. They arrived in New York, America, in 1992, and lived for a while in Virginia before moving to and settling in Minneapolis.
