On December 9, 1968, Hikaru Nakamura was born to a Japanese father, Shuichi Nakamura, and an American mother, Carolyn Merrow Nakamura, in the city of Hirakata, Osaka Prefecture, Japan. His father was a former public school teacher, and his mother was a classically trained musician.
When he was two years old, his family moved to the United States of America. Unfortunately, his parents went their separate ways when he was just three years old in 1990.
Nakamura started playing chess at around the age of seven; he was coached by his Sri-Lankan step-father Sunil Weeramantry, a FIDE Master and Chess author.

In 2013 he was at the Top Fide Blitz rating in 2014 at No.3 ranking and Zurich Chess Challenge, in 2015 2800 rating, fourth U.S Championship, and Grand Prix 2nd place.
