On December 9, 1968, Hikaru Nakamura was born to a Japanese father, Shuichi Nakamura, and an American mother, Carolyn Merrow Nakamura, in the city of Hirakata, Osaka Prefecture, Japan. His father was a former public school teacher, and his mother was a classically trained musician.

When he was two years old, his family moved to the United States of America. Unfortunately, his parents went their separate ways when he was just three years old in 1990.
