Early life

The renowned film director was born during World War II, on 5th January 1941 in Bunkyō, Tokyo. Hayao was interested in animation and manga from his early life. His father, Katsuji Miyazaki, was an Aeronautical Engineer who was also the director of his family firm Miyazaki Airplanes. His father died in March 1993, at the age of 77-78. Hayao’s mother, Dola Miyazaki, was diagnosed with spinal tuberculosis, passed away in 1983. He has two brothers Shirou Miyazaki, Yutaka Miyazaki and one sister Arita Miyazaki.

Due to the World War II catastrophe, when Hayao was three years old, his family first evacuated to Utsunomiya. The family then moved to Kanuma after the bombing in Utsunomiya. He started his education at an institute in Utsunomiya. He then joined institutions like Eifuku School and Omiya Junior High. Miyazaki pursued his higher studies from Gakushuin University, in Tokyo.

Here he worked with Isao Takahata and co-directed 23 episodes of ‘Lupin III’.

They both worked together on many projects like ‘Panda! Go, Panda’ and ‘Heidi, Girl of the Alps’. In 1973, he joined Nippon Animation. In 1979, Miyazaki left Nippon. In 1990, his manga worked such as ‘Princess Mononoke’, and ‘Porco Rosso’ was appreciated by the audience. He directed a fantasy film in 2004, ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’ as the movie’s director Mamoru Hosuda expired. The audience and critics praised the film alike. In 2008, Hayao directed the film ‘Gake no ue no Ponyo’ which went on to become the highest-grossing movie at that time.
