Harry Julius Shearer was born on December 23, 1943, in Los Angeles, California, the U.S. to his parents Dora Warren and Mack Shearer. His father was a bookkeeper and was a Jewish immigrant from Austria and Poland. He started learning piano at the age of four. When Shearer was seven years old, he got his first role in the radio show The Jack Benny Program.
In 1953, at the age of ten, Shearer made his feature film debut in the science-fiction comedy movie Abbott and Costello Go to Mars. In the same year, he was seen in the movie The Robe. Later, in the 1960s and 70s, he appeared in many films as a child artist.
