Born on 21 December 1963 to former actor Aroon (Arun Kumar Ahuja) and singer and actress Nirmala Devi, Govinda grew up in Virar in the northern suburb of Mumbai. He was the youngest of the six children and was nicknamed ‘Chi Chi’ which meant the little finger. He grew up with both Punjabi and Sindhi roots from his paternal and maternal sides, respectively. He completed his Bachelors’s degree in Commerce from Vartak College, Vasai.

During the shooting of Tan Badan, Govinda fell in love with Sunita Munjal, who happened to be the sister in law of his uncle, Anand Singh. Their love flourished, and they got married on 11 March 1987.
