History

Rhett and Link aired the first episode of Good Morning Chia Lincoln on 3rd January 2011, a similar show with the same theme and format. The show closed on February 28, after 40 episodes. On 9th January 2012, Rhett and Link aired the first episode of Good Mythical Morning, to their YouTube channel of the same name. The series’ crew only had one member during the first season, but now they have grown to have twenty-eight members, as a part of Mythical Entertainment.

Due to fans reactions to their behind-the-scenes crew led to the creation of their second YouTube channel “Mythical”, which focuses on their crew and other skits. The show focuses on Rhett and Link as they do challenges, tell stories, sing songs, and more. Good Mythical Morning became a YouTube Original series on November 6, 2017. Afterwards, they reverted to their classic format.

Format

Good Mythical Morning uploads videos to YouTube every weekday morning at approximately 6:00 AM Eastern Time. Each episode usually consists of Rhett and Link playing food-related games, answering often absurd questions and doing antics.

From the 12th Season of GMM, after the 53rd episode, they uploaded 4 episode per week format, where they uploaded four episodes of GMM and made them public at the same time. They made regular 15-minute episodes into 30 minutes episodes of Good Mythical Morning. Rhett and Link continued the 4-episode format until the end of Season 12, as when the 13th season started, they reduced the frequency to 3 episodes per week.

From the 14th season, they closed the 3-episode format and switched back to making one episode per day, followed by their weekly Saturday morning show, Let’s Talk About That (LTAT), which was hosted by Stevie Wynne Levine, who was an executive producer. On Sundays, they show an episode of Mythical Kitchen, which is hosted by GMM’s head chef, Josh Scherer.

At the end of every episode, Rhett and Link spin the “Wheel of Mythicality,” which can land in categories such as “Win face,” “6 Degrees of Bacon,” and “Gifticality.” The contents of the wheel may change in every season. The consequences of each wheel spin are given by Good Mythical More, which is a more relaxed after-show.

Reception

The show became very popular on YouTube until April 2019, with the Good Mythical Morning channel having more than 15 million subscribers and over 5 billion video views. Each episode generally generates over 1 million views. The show has won awards such as Best Web Series at the Shorty Awards, Best Variety Series at the International Academy of Web Television Awards, Best Comedy Series and Non-Fiction Channel on YouTube, Series or Show at the Streamy Awards, among many others. They were also featured on the TV show The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with episodes of “Will It Tea,” “Will It S’ more,” “Will It Hot Dog,” and “Will It Hummus?”

Fans’ response to the series has been mostly positive: the relaunched format, starting on 6th November 2017, was met with a negative reaction from many fans. Many viewers criticized the new format, suddenly focusing on guest stars, targeting the show for losing its charm,  and making the new episodes feel forced and rushed. Several fans also reacted negatively to the decision to split each episode into four parts.

The show addressed these complaints in a video response, the number of views for newer episodes steadily declining in the following weeks, with only a handful of episodes surpassing one million views. Despite all this criticism, the show was successful in retaining over fifteen million subscribers to its YouTube channel.

The show reverted to the older format in July 2018, and complaints by fans became lesser. The show was once again successful in surpassing a million views per episode regularly. Good Mythical Morning won “Show of the Year” at the 9th Streamy Awards in December 2019.
