Early Life

Born into a Jewish working-class family, Gloria Rachel Bloom saw the light of the day on July 3rd, 1941. She was born to a salesman father, Morris and a housewife mother, Stella in Philadelphia. She completed her schooling from Philadelphia High School for Girls. After that, she joined the University of Pennsylvania for her graduation and met her first husband there. She was married to Peyton Bray with whom she had a daughter, Lisa Bloom, who is also an attorney. The daughter was born on September 20th, 1961, and they filed for divorce shortly after.

After her divorce, Gloria went back to her parents and pursued her education. She graduated with a BA in English with honours in 1963 writing her thesis on black writers. She completed her Masters in 1966 and moved to LA, California where she lived in Watts. She was actively engaged with the LA Teachers Association and took up teaching jobs at Fremont High School and Jordan High School.
