Gerald Michael Rivera, now known as Geraldo Rivera, was born in New York City, New York. He was born to Lillian, who was a restaurant worker and Cruz Allen Rivera, a cab driver. Rivera was raised Jewish, and he also had a Bar Mitzvah ceremony. He was raised in Brooklyn and West Babylon, New York. He attended State University of New York Maritime College from 1961 to 1963.

He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1965 and further went to Brooklyn Law School to study Law in 1966. He became a frequent activist for a Puerto Rican activist group, the Young Lords, and eventually took to private practice. He was offered a job by Primo, but as he was not satisfied with the way his first name sounded, it was decided that he should be called Geraldo instead of Gerald.
