  1. The band Rush was formed with John Rutsey as the drummer. Due to health reasons, Rutsey left the band after releasing their first album, “Rush”. Neil Peart was recruited as a replacement.

  2. Right, Neil Peart did not join Rush until around 1973 or 74, after the release of their first titled album “Rush”, where John Rutsey, their original drummer was unable to join their first American tour because of his diabetes (type1).

Alex Lifeson was actually the one to form the group under the name “Rush”. Geddy Lee would join later as a second guitarist. Their first bassist had to quit because his mother thought rock music was evil and made him stop.

Instead of getting a new bass player, Geddy agreed to take over the role and what a bass player he became. I don’t know how good he was on guitar, but he proved to be one of the best bass players rock music has ever produced.

Geddy also took over the role as singer, since they had no singer. Even being lead singer on every song, Geddy still continued to make his bass parts more and more complicated. That wasn’t enough for Lee, so he decided to toss in keyboards, just to make it a challenge for him.

Releasing their first album and needing to go on their first tour to promote it became problematic without a drummer with two weeks to prepare. Only Rush could be so lucky to be in such a spot, where they would have taken any decent dummer that walk through the door, but instead, the greatest drummer rock music would ever know come to audition. What luck!

Even though Neil was the “new guy” even 40 years later, they would go on to sell more consecutive gold records than any band, except the Beatles and The Rolling Stones. It’s not bad being third when those are the only bands to outsell you.

The rest is music history and Rush was a big part of that history as they are probably the most influential band ever. They were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2013 where Alex Lifeson gave a speech befitting the honor.

The RRHOF is a joke and never wanted Rush in their dumb Hall anyway, but they put up a poll on their website where folks could vote on the last inductee that year and Rush won 25% of the total vote.

No one else made double digits, even though there are still many great groups who have yet to be inducted, while pop, rap, hip hop and all other kind of artist, who never played a rock song in their career, have been inducted into the Hall.

The last bit of news for Rush was the passing of “the Professor”, Neil Peart in January of 2020. There has never been a drummer like him.

He was more than a drummer, but a complete musician. Besides writing 99% of all the lyrics for Rush songs, his drumming style was some of the most creative use of a variety of percussion instruments, making much of his drumming as melodic as the rest of the band.

This is why he is so admired and beloved. I have never seen so many people air-drumming as I have at every Rush concert I was privileged enough to attend.
