Fredua Koranteng Adu was born on 2 June 1989 in the seaport town of Tema, Ghana, in West Africa. His parents, Maxwell and Emelia Adu, were local convenience store owners. In the hope of providing better education to Freddy and his brother, his parents participated in an immigration lottery through the U.S. embassy in Ghana in 1997. After winning it, they relocated to Potomac, Maryland, near Washington, D.C.
