Smith was born in 1944 outside Memphis, Tennessee, to Sally Smith and Frederic C. He lost his father, who was a self-made millionaire himself when he was four years old.
He was born with a congenital disability – Legg-Calve-Perthes Syndrome, a form of arthritis that crippled him for most of his youth. He eventually grew out of the disease and learned how to pilot airplanes. He attended the Presbyterian Day School and then joined the Memphis University School. After completing his bachelor’s degree in economics from Yale University, he enlisted in the U.S Marine Corps and served with them during the Vietnam War.
Smith married the television host Linda Black in the year 1969. The marriage, however, ended in divorce in 1977. He is currently married to Dianne Avis.
