Starting his career while in high school, Fred grew to be a highly coveted player in the whole nation, especially as a lineman. Joining college, Fred was phenomenal in his college career. While at San Diego State University (SDSU), in 1988, Fred got inducted to the El Camino C.C. Athletic Hall Of Fame. Further on, he was the athlete of the year in 1966. IN 1967 he also received the Byron H. Chase Memorial Trophy for being the outstanding defensive lineman on his team.

Before joining the NFL, he was already inducted in the San Diego State University Aztec Hall of Fame, having played for the team in the Hula Bowl in Honolulu as well as East-west Shrine Game held in San Francisco.

In 1969, Fred debuted in the NFL while playing for the New York Giants as the starting right defensive end. He led his team into different victories, after which he joined the New England Patriots at the beginning of the year.  At the end of the year, he had 40 tackles. The following year, having played 14 starting games, he became the only NFL player to ever have two safeties in a single game.

Before retiring, Fred had 104 career sacks altogether since he joined his football career with different great achievements through the way.

Having retired from football in 1982, Fred joined CBS NFL coverage as a color analyst. HE then debuted his acting career with the film, Cheers, as a sportscaster. Additionally, he made an appearance on CHiPs.
