Hudson (born on 17 December 1945) was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan knew nothing of his father. And then he lost his mother, Maggie(Donald), to Tuberculosis when he was two months old. He was brought up by his grandparents, Arrana Donald.
After his high school, Hudson joined the US Marine Corps but was soon dismissed due to his asthma conditions. He debuted at Concept East, the oldest black theatre in the United States as a play writer after he moved to Detroit, Michigan. Ernie then went to Wayne State University to sharpen his writing and acting skills. He graduated from the same in 1973. He founded the Ensemble Theatre for young black talented writers and actor. He went to Yale School of Drama to complete his Masters in acting.

He met his love of life when he was eighteen, Jeannie Moore, sixteen at that time. They married and had two sons, Ernie Hudson Jr. and Rahman Hudson. Unfortunately, they separated in 1976, and their sons moved with Ernie Hudson in California. He married his second wife Linda Kingsberg and had two sons Andrew and Ross.
