He was born Erik Galen Menendez on 27 November 1970 to the late Jose and Mary Menendez. He was born in Blackwood, New Jersey as the second child of the couple. His mother was a former teacher, and she left her job after getting her first child. Erik started schooling at Princeton Day School. His family later moved to Calabasas, California, and after a year he started education at a high school in Calabasas. He earned an average grade, but his talent in tennis was remarkable. He even ranked 44th in the national under 18-and-under players list.

Erik is a married man, and he is married to Tammi Ruth. They got married on 12 June 1999, in a prison waiting room at the Folsom State Prison. The brothers were said to execute the crime, and then they went out for movies at the theatre where they wanted to see Batman, and then they also watched “Taste of L.A” at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. After the movies, they went for drinks with their friends, and later when they got home, they called 9-1-1, claiming someone had killed their parents.
Initially, the brothers were not suspects, but a few months after the murders, they began spending money lavishly, and this raised suspicion of their involvement in the murders.
