Early Life and Biography:

He was born to a lower-class working yet loving family in Newcastle, England. He describes his earlier school days as a nightmare. Later, he got into the Newcastle art college due to his love of music, and there he met John Steel, who later went on to become the drummer of their band Animals.

At the start of the 60s, he, along with some other friends, used to hang out at a local club called Downbeat, owned by Mike Jeffery, who later on became the manager of Animals. By 67, Eric had become a heavy drinker and was also into the drug culture of Los Angeles. He was also arrested once in Germany, where his drug abuse habits became more severe.

Eric has always been asthmatic from his earlier days, and so he currently resides in Ojai, California, a place with a dry climate to better control his condition.

Personal Life:

Eric got married to English-Indian Model Angie King in September of 1967, but the couple divorced in 1969 when she moved on to Eric’s close friend Jimi Hendrix, another Rockstar. Despite that, Eric and Jimi remained on close terms until Jimi’s death in 1970.

He met Rose Marks in Los Angeles, and they got married in September of 1972. Touring North America and Europe, he left his wife at home who fell into substance abuse, and their marriage started falling apart until they got divorced in 1978. Eric’s only child, his daughter Alex comes from Rose. Alex is married now, with Eric being a granddad to Alex’s two daughters, Keaira and Justice and son, Eric.

Eric married his attorney Marianna Proestu at the end of the 90s, and she has also been managing his career since their marriage. They currently reside in Ojai, California. Eric has also published three autobiographies, with the most recent one in 2013 named Breathless.

Age, height, and weight:

Being born on 11 May 1941, Eric Burdon is 82 years old as of today’s date 28th March 2024. His height is 1.8 m tall, and his weight is 84 kg.

Career:

Eric (vocals), with Alan Price (keyboards), Chas Chandler (Bass), Hilton Valentine(guitar), and John Steel (drums), became the resident band of the club A’Gogo Jazz Lounge, also owned by Mike Jeffery. Later, they named themselves Animals. They were a rhythm and blues and rock band and were eccentric performers, bringing energy and fervor to the stage with them.

However, Burden has claimed that this wasn’t the reason for the name Animals, rather it came from a man he knew who was nicknamed Animal. Their first breakthrough came in 1964 when they recorded The House of the Rising Sun, which went on to become number one throughout the world. Songs like I’m Crying (1964), Don’t let me be misunderstood (1965), We gotta get out of this place (1965) and Don’t bring me down (1966) further fueled their popularity. Their self-titled album was released in 1964, followed by albums in the next two years as well.

By 1967, all the members of Animals had moved to different projects, and so in 1967, Eric formed the all-new group Eric Burdon and the Animals. It was a more psychedelic band that included various hits like San Franciscan Night and Summer of love and Monterey. After five albums, the band broke up, and Eric went on to form Eric Burdon and War with the funk Rock band, War. This era included hits like Spill the wine and Tobacco Road.

He started his solo career in 1971 with Eric Burdon Band. He couldn’t reach the same heights as a solo artist despite releasing various albums. The original members of Animals were also reunited two times, once in 1975 and once in 1983, but they couldn’t reignite the charts again. Eric has also tried on other lineups for animals, with his most recent one being in 2016. He has no plans for retirement as of yet and still enjoys being in the music industry.

Awards and Achievements:

  • Eric is currently ranked 57thon Rolling Stone’s list of 100 greatest singers of all time.
  • He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in 1994 as a member of Animals.
  • The House of the Rising Sun went on to win British Disc of the year in NME awards.

  7. Eric,
Eric, Thank you for so many years of wonderful music. I fell under your spell completely after “Winds of Change.” I also got great pleasure from your friend Jimi, especially “Axis Bold As Love.” Gone way too soon. Recently saw Kenny James’ son whom I advised to follow in Jimi’s footsteps…we’ll see.
Had tickets to your concert with War in Montreal circa 1971 but that was when you decided to move on, my loss. So lucky to have “been experienced” at 21 and fortunate to have had your music to help along the way, over so many years. Your gift was my gift as well. First saw you in Reno and later three times in Chico (Feather Falls). Enjoy the many precious and wonderful moments left on our journey. Your friend in Chico. Roland

  8. I grew up in the ’60’s and really liked the music of the Animals, especially The House of the Rising Sun. I played that song many times on my Fender Mustang, which I still have. In 1974 I became a Christian and realized that the chords to The House of the Rising Sun could also be used to play Amazing Grace. What a transition in words! Now that’s special! Great voice; great music Eric. Hope you’ve trusted Christ! We’re not young anymore and eternity is too long to be wrong.

  9. Incredible talent with a voice that commands respect.
I’m 65 now and remember listening to all his big hits when they came out in the mid 60’s when I was just a boy.
I’m introducing his music now to my 26 year old daughter ☝️

  10. I met him at a party in ‘68 or’69 in Riverside,CA after he played in the area. Later met his wife Rose and their daughter when I and they lived in the south end of Palm Springs mid 70’s ,mutual friends Sandy and Douglas lived a few doors down from them. Eric should come back with his great voice and play in PS at one of the venues
