The acting career of Elinor began when she was still a child. As a teenage actress, she had appearances in Love Is Better Than Ever in 1952 and 1948 she appeared in Three Daring Daughters. Another film she appeared on in her teen years was titled Girls Town in 1959.
Her stardom came in the early 1950s when she appeared in the family television series by the name of Father Knows Best. In the series, she played the role of Betty, who was the elder daughter of Margaret and Jim Anderson. While in the first season of the series, she also had an appearance on The Ray Bolger Show.
