Early Life
Born to a reverend father Floyd M. Long Jr. and a homemaker mother Hattie Long in Huntersville, North Carolina, Eddie Long followed in his father’s footsteps and became a priest. Although, the priesthood was not his first choice of vocation, as he had opted to work for the Ford Motor Corporation after obtaining a B.A. in Business Administration from the North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina.
However, he soon got dismissed from there and shifted base to Atlanta. It was here that he began to take an interest in theology and became a pastor in a small church in Jonesboro, Georgia before becoming a senior priest at the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, a position he held from 1987-2017.
Personal Life
Eddie Long has been married twice. His 1st marriage to Dabara S. Houston ended in a scandalous divorce where she accused him of mental and physical harassment. He even lost the custody of their only son Edward Long to her in the battle.
In 1990, he married his 2nd wife, Vanessa Griffin. After about 21 years the marriage hit rock bottom when Eddie was stormed with allegations of sexually abusing minor boys of his church. In 2012 however, the couple reunited when Vanessa announced that she wanted to give another chance to her marriage and return to her New Birth family.
Eddie Long breathed his last in January 2017 when he succumbed to cancer after a prolonged battle with the vicious disease.
