Edmund Patrick Jordan was born to Eileen and Paddy Jordan on 30 March 1948 at the Wentworth Nursing Home in Dublin. His father was an accountant for an electricity board. He grew up in Darty South Dublin and Bray County Wicklow. He was nicknamed “Flash” during his childhood, which came as a result of his surname rhyming with the name Gordon.

He went to Pre-School in Milltown and later joined Synge Street Christian Brothers School, the school had very strict, measures and the students were beaten thoroughly if they did not study hard.
