On January 4, 1937, Camille Diane Friesen was born to Ben Friesen and Claire (nee Portnoy) in the city of Tacoma, Washington. Her father was a life insurance salesman, and her mother was a housewife.

Cannon went to Western Seattle High School and spent two and a half years at the University of Washington. She was raised in the Jewish faith of her Ashkenazi mother, a Russian immigrant, while her father was Baptist. She has a younger brother, who is a jazz musician known as David Friesen.
