Yates suffered from chronic and acute injuries throughout his professional career, including torn triceps and biceps. However, just three weeks before his final contest, he won the 1997 Mr. Olympia title in spite of the injury. His win created controversy among critics who thought his runner-up deserved to win.

Yates liked to use High-Intensity Training or HIT because it helped in maximum muscle stimulation within a short period, so he did not have to do long-duration workouts. This style of training was made popular by Arthur Jones and Mike Mentzer.

He used to remain out of the public eye for long periods and unexpectedly appear and win major bodybuilding contests, which gave him the nickname “The Shadow.” He also turned down several large supplement endorsement contracts and did not like giving interviews to keep his life private.

Yates is known as one of the firsts “mass monsters” in bodybuilding and was also criticized for being among the first prominent bodybuilders to exhibit an inflated stomach. He used to maintain an extreme level of training intensity all year long, even if he is not contesting at any event, which weakens the body globally.

After retiring from professional bodybuilding, Yates purchased Temple Gym in Birmingham in the year 1987. Later, he opened four Temple Gyms at different locations in the UK. Along with Mike Mentzer and Ray Mentzer, he founded the company Heavy Duty Inc. in 1994, which marketed athletic apparel and bodybuilding-related books.

Yates collaborated with Kerry Kayes to start the bodybuilding supplement company CNP Professional. After working together for a few years, he left the company and formed his own brand Dorian Yates Ultimate Formulas, which offered a line of protein and weight-gain supplements.
