Dorian Andrew Mientjez Yates was born in Walmley, Warwickshire, England, on 19 April 1962. When he was thirteen years old, his father died due to a heart attack. Yates was interested in bodybuilding since he was a teenager and trained at local gyms.
After the death of his father, Yates’ family moved to Birmingham, UK, where he started working out and thought of making bodybuilding his full-time career.

However, just three weeks before his final contest, he won the 1997 Mr. Olympia title in spite of the injury. His win created controversy among critics who thought his runner-up deserved to win.
