On December 29, 1979, Diego Luna Alexander was born to Alejandro Luna and Fiona Alexander in Toluca, Mexico, but was raised in Mexico City. His mother was a British costume designer of Scottish and English descent; unfortunately, she died in a car accident when Diego was two years old. His father Alejandro is a theater film and opera set designer who reinforced the importance of theater and the arts to Diego.
