The Aries star-signed baseball player was the son of Trudy and John Fowler. They were of Afro-American ethnicity. He grew up with his sibling Wesley Fowler in Atlanta and studied at the Milton High School in Milton, Georgia. In 105 at-bats at Milton, Fowler hit.457 with 14 home runs.

Fowler was selected in the 14th round of the 2004 Major League Baseball draught by the Colorado Rockies. Major League Baseball chose him to play in the All-Star Futures Game at Yankee Stadium in 2008. On September 2, 2008, Fowler was called up to the Major Leagues for the first time.

That same day, he began his career in a 6–5 extra-inning home triumph over the San Francisco Giants. Fowler led the Majors with 14 triples in 2010.

On December 3, 2013, Fowler was dealt with the Houston Astros along with a player to be named later for outfielder Brandon Barnes and pitcher Jordan Lyles. Fowler was dealt with the Chicago Cubs on January 19, 2015, in exchange for Luis Valbuena and Dan Straily.
