Dee was born on 15th March 1955 in Astoria, Queens, New York. Though he was from a working-class family, he liked to perform on stage as a child. He sang for the Baldwin High School Concert Choir, church choir, and several school choruses. He was selected for All-State Chorus when he was at the high school as showed promise of becoming a good singer from an early age.
After his graduation in 1973 from the Baldwin High School, Snider joined and left many rock bands as was not able to find his desired success.

In 1976, he joined the group Twisted Sister, an American heavy metal band founded by guitarist Jay French in the year 1972. The group formed an excellent team of instrument players till 1975 like guitarist Eddie “Fingers” Ojeda, drummer Kevin John Grace, and bassist Kenneth Harrison Neil but it was not complete without a lead singer, and Dee was fit for them. He quickly becomes famous as the lead singer and lyricist of the group.
The group released their very first album in 1982 named Under the Blade which achieved moderate success. Their next You Can’t Stop Rock ‘n’ Roll earned a lot more fame than their previous one. But their 1984 album Stay Hungry brought them into the limelight which they wanted for a very long time. Some of the hit singles of the group are “I Wanna Rock” and “We’re Not Gonna Take It”.
