Chase was born In Mount Vernon, New York United States in August 22, 1945. He is the only child of Norma Chase and Henry Chase. His father was a hardware store owner in New Jersey. His upbringing was faced with many challenges as his mother was a drama queen and his father was an angry man that looked down upon Chase.
Because of the environment he grew up in, he struggled through his teenage hood with a lot of depression and always afraid to express himself. His depression worsened when he went to Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem in North Carolina. While in school he aspired to be a musician he even used to be a drummer.
He transferred to New York University after two years and this is where he switched his career and stared pursuing his career in film. The decision to switch was not well received by his parents. Then he graduated in 1971 with a Master of Arts degree from Stanford University.
