Daniel Peter Seraphine was born to John and Mary Seraphine in Chicago. The family lived in the Dunning neighbourhood on Chicago’s northwest side. As a native boy, he spent most part of his life there. Peter started playing drums when he was at a tender age of nine years, while attending St. Priscilla Catholic grade school.

At the age of 15 years, Seraphine withdrew from Steinmetz High School.Later on outside school, he joined a local gang called the JPs. After declining to quit as a professional drummer in 1965, Peter was invited to join Jimmy Ford and the executives when it merged with another local band.

Peter studied privately with percussionist Bob Tiles at DePaul University. He joined big band drummer Chuck Flores to continue with his education. This followed by two years of study under jazz drummer Jo Jones where he horned his skills.
