Dan Henderson was born as Daniel Jeffery Henderson on 24th August 1970 in Downey, California, in the USA. He was born together with his brother Tom Henderson and their father, Bill Henderson, was among the coaches who assisted them in their wrestling while in high school. He grew up in Apple Valley, California, where he started wrestling at a young age.
He attended Victor Valley High School, where he participated with various championships and won a number of medals. He attended Cal State Fullerton and Arizona State University, where he continued with his wrestling career.
