William Martin “Clu” Gulager was born on November 16, 1928, in Holdenville, Oklahoma. His father, John Delancey Gulager was also an actor. After completing high school, he attended Northeastern State University in Oklahoma.

He later got transferred to Baylor University in Taco. Gulager was also in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1946 to 1948. Later, he received a scholarship and traveled to Paris to work for Jean Louis Barrault.

Clu Gulager started his career in the entertainment world when he appeared in an episode of The United States Steel Hour in 1956. After guest appearing in many TV shows, he was seen in Wagon Train in 1959. He then portrayed the role of Billy the Kid in The Tall Man from 1960 to 1962. Gulager has also starred in The Virginian from 1963 to 1968. In 1979, the actor was seen in The MacKenzies of Paradise Cove.
