Emily Drinkard was born on 30th September 1933 in Newark, New Jersey. She was the daughter of Nicholas and Delia Mae Drinkard, being the last and eighth child to her parents. She had four older brothers, William, Hansom, Nicky, and Larry, and three older sisters, Lee, Marie, and Larry, all of who are deceased except her. Her mother died when she was five years after suffering from stroke, and later, her father died when she was 18 from stomach cancer. She was brought up by her elder sister.

Cissy and her siblings were brought up in church, and their parents encouraged them to sing, and at the age of fourteen, she got born again. She attended South Side High School.

Houston has been involved in two marriages in her life. She first met and married her first husband, Freddie Garland, in 1955. Together they had a son, Gary Garland, but their marriage did not last as they divorced in 1957. She married her second husband, John Russell Houston, in 1959 and had a son, Michael Houston, and a daughter, Whitney Houston, who was a popular singer although she later passed away in 2012. Houston later formed another group, Sweet Inspirations with Doris Troy and Dee Dee Warwick, in 1963 and used to provide backup vocals for artists like,’ Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and her niece Dionne Warwick among others. Her final performance with Sweet Inspirations was backup vocals for Elvis Presley, after which she decided to become a recording artist and allow her time to look after her children.

She had several singles before forming Sweet Inspirations and recorded them in 1967. Commonwealth United Records signed a contract with her in 1969 and recorded her album, Presenting Cissy Houston through it, which consisted singles like, ‘’I’ll be there’’ and ‘’Be My Baby’’.

She then moved to Janus Records in 1970 and recorded several albums and singles, and later in 1977, she signed with Private Stock Records. With this, she released her disco hit, ‘’Think it Over,’’ and later in 1980 released another disco album, ‘’Step Aside for a Lady’’ but this time through Columbia Records.
