Christopher Darden was born on 7 April 1956 in Richmond, California, and is the fourth child out of eight children of his parents. He attended high school at John .F.Kennedy High School, where he graduated for his diploma in 1974. Christopher then attended San Jose State University for his college degree.

At San Jose, he was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, a black American fraternity, and he also participated in Track and field. In 1977 he graduated for his B.S in Criminal Justice. He attended the University of California, Hastings, for his Juris Doctorate, which he graduated in 1980.
