Chris Harris was born on the 20th of January 1975 in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. His father, Ian Harris, was an accountant, and his mother, Angela Wilding, was an autocross racer. Not much is known about his primary high school education, but he did go to Clifton College in Bristol.

Chris Harris began his career working for Autocar, where he mostly did menial jobs. After some time, he was promoted to an official road-test editor position within Autocar and got quite the reputation as a journalist. At Autocar, he was given the nickname, Monkey, in reference to the character, ‘Monkey’ Harris in Only Fools and Horses.

In 2008, he left Autocarto co-establish a digital-based platform called Drivers Republic, which only operated for one year. He immediately joined Evoas a writer and reviewer where his features were published every few months.

In partnership with DRIVE, Harris created an opinion and review YouTube series that aired weekly from early 2012. This was established on DRIVE’s YouTube channel called, CHRIS HARRIS ON CARS. Each episode featured the car to be reviewed, that was either owned by Chris Harris, or loaned to DRIVE by the manufacturer.

The series went on to do very well, making a total of 104 videos that amassed a total of 3,500,000 views in 2 years. After 2 years of hosting the series, he left to start his own YouTube channel, later stating that he maintained a positive relationship with DRIVE.

On the 27th of October, 2014, Harris’ YouTube channel, Chris Harris On Cars, was successfully created and ready for operation. He partnered with his long-term colleague, Neil Carey, who specializes as a cameraman, and still shoots for Chris Harris On Carsindependently.

The channel is doing very well, getting 440,000 subscribers and nearly 45,000,000 views. Furthermore, he started writing for Jalopnik on November 6th, 2014, which is an online automotive blog.

In February 2016, Harris officially joined the new cast of Top Gear, replacing Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. He served as a recurring presenter for the show in 2016, but was promoted to main presenter after the resignation of Chris Evans.
