Charles was born in San Jose, California, on 17 September 1955. He is of French descendent and is very fluent in French and Spanish. His family later moved to Barcelona and then to Paris when he was 12 years old. Charles started his graduation from the University of California, Berkeley, where he expected to study international law, but decided to discontinue when his tutor asked him to emit the information that is written in his book chapter wise.
He was suffering from Glossophobia or fear of public speaking. Then one of his friends suggested he take acting classes when he can confront his fear. Martinet, one day, was told by his friend to go for the audition, which was going to be held in a trade show where candidates would “talk to people as a plumber.” When he arrived there at the last minute when the casting directors were packing up for the day. Though, to his luck, the director allowed him to audition and said he is an Italian from Brooklyn. Martinet planned to talk in a stereotypical Italian deep, raspy voice, but later, he thought it would become too harsh for the children to hear. Then, he made it more soft-hearted and friendly, resulting in what we have today as Mario’s voice. Charles claim, his inspiration for the portrayal of Mario was the character of ‘Petruchio’ from William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of The Shrew.”
Charles appeared in several films like Hard Travelling in 1986, The Deadpool in 1988, Mom in 1991, Nine Months in 1995, Criminal Hearts in 1996.
