People have ventured into so many successful fields in the present day today, such as banking, food processing, automobile manufacture, and so many others. Another very lucrative field is fashion, with so many companies in the forefront, such as Chanel.

Chanel is a French privately held company owned by Alain Wertheimer and Gerard Wertheimer, grandsons of Pierre Wertheimer. The company focuses on high fashion and ready-made clothes, luxury products, and accessories. The brand has also been personified by male and female celebrities such as Kristen Stewart, Pharrell Williams, Anna Mouglalis, and many others.

Chanel became famous for using jersey fabric to make women’s fashion that flattered all women. The company captured the attention of many buyers in Europe and later on, all around the world. The company’s brand is now well known all over the world and is now on almost everyone’s shopping list.

Inception

House of Chanel originated when Coco Chanel (Gabrielle Chanel) opened a millinery shop on the ground floor of the Parisian flat of the socialite and textile businessman, Etienne Balsan. Because the building was also a salon for wealthy men who showered women with clothes, hats, and jewelry, her creative mind of fashion was born there and then. Coco later befriended Boy Capel and became his mistress. He financed her first independent millinery shop in 21 Rue Cambon, Paris, but was limited to only selling hats because the locale already housed a dress shop. Coco used jersey cloth for her products, which was a good idea, but she was challenged by the First World War because of a shortage of materials.

In 1915 and 1917, Harper’s Bazaar magazine reported that La Maison Chanel produced goods that were on everyone’s list. The rise of the franchise was clearly evident as it released pioneering products, especially for women. In 1921, Coco made a perfume that they presented to their customers as gifts, but after gaining a lot of popularity, they began selling it as a retail product.

Theophile Bader introduced Coco to Pierre Wertheimer to launch Parfums Chanel Company to promote the perfumes. The relationship between Gabrielle and Pierre was on the rocks, especially because Coco was not satisfied with her percentage stake in the company. In 1947, the two came to an agreement to resolve the feud that was going on between the two.

In 1953, Chanel collaborated with Robert Goosens, a jeweler who was to make jewelry that would suit the clothing products released by the company. In the 1950s, Chanel’s sense of style was undeterred and also introduced the masculine perfume, eau de toilette. Chanel spent the rest of her life designing until the time of her death on January 10, 1971.

The leadership of the company went to Yvonne Dudel, Jean Cazaubon, and Phillippe Guibourge. After Jacques Wertheimer taking control of the company in 1965, people stated that he was not dedicated to the company. The son of Jacques Wertheimer, Alain Wertheimer, took over in 1974, and by making their perfumes scarce from the public, the company became extremely popular.

Evolution

In 1983, Karl Lagerfeld took over as chief designer for Chanel. He took a traditional approach to design by incorporating some of Coco’s designs and some recent fashion trends. Chanel marketed all of its products on its own, and the franchise easily became the most successful French fashion house. The company also went on to purchase other major companies such as Holland & Holland and Eres. The company continued blossoming and introducing new products to the market. The market ventured into menswear in 2002 and the first unisex watch in 2000. The company expanded its boutiques all over the world, such as in major countries, such as the USA and China.
