Early Life

Buzz Aldrin was born on January 20, 1930, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. His father Edwin Eugene Aldrin Sr. was a retired military man. His mother’s name was Marion Aldrin. Both his parents later committed suicide at different points of time, which made Aldrin explain his depressions as genetic. His original full name was Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr. Much later, he changed his first name to Buzz in 1988. Buzz is the short form of Buzzer, which was his nickname in childhood.

Career

In 1951, Aldrin graduated from the Military Academy with a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering. He was commissioned in the US Air Force with the rank of second lieutenant.

Aldrin was on active duty during the Korean War as a fighter pilot. After the war, Aldrin reported at the US Air Force Academy as an instructor.

In 1955, he graduated from the Squadron Officer School at Air Force Base at Maxell. In 1959 he joined the Air Force Institute of Technology; as a graduate student.
